Acpac Semi Hermetic Packaged Condensing Units, Cabero Evaporators, Carel Electronic Expansion Valve and Carel MasterCella Control

A prominent grape grower in the Swan Hill Victoria asked his refrigeration contractor to design a cool store that would best preserve his table grapes and ensure the quality and product shelf life is maximized. The contractor approached Actrol Bendigo branch Manager Heath Nicol for advice on how to improve on traditional designs and equipment to achieve his client’s specification.

Heath offered two Acpac semi hermetic packaged refrigeration condensing units each matched to a Cabero evaporator with 500mm Ziehl fans to ensure even air flow when removing heat from the freshly picked grapes. A variable speed drive was added to the evaporator fans to reduce the fan speed to 50% whenever the temperature set point is reached. The reduced air circulation increases the quality of the stored grapes while also reducing the energy consumption and noise levels of the fans. Carel electronic expansion valves were used to minimize energy consumption by allowing the condensing temperature to float down with the ambient temperature.

The grower is very satisfied with the results. He says his only concern is the Acpac units are so quiet he can’t hear them run from his house just 10m away. An indication light and alarm was installed so he can visually satisfy himself his table grapes are being well looked after.
