Keeping on top of HFC refrigerant phase-outs

As you would be aware there has been much discussion in world news about HFC refrigerants and their effect on global warming. Currently these particular man-made refrigerants are being heavily discussed under the International Montreal Protocol Framework, and the Australian Government has put their first foot forward in addressing climate change by proposing a gradual phase-down plan.

In July, the Australian government announced they will introduce a legislative phase-down of HFC imports which will begin as of January 2018. It will be a similar phase-down as freshly completed with HCFC refrigerants and will be implemented at a slow and gradual pace that the industry is more than capable of handling.

So what does this mean for you?

The new legislation will provide importers of HFC refrigerants with a quota they cannot exceed. Every two years the quota will be reviewed and reduced, based on historical import volumes. ACTROL has more than adequate availability - so don’t panic!

The gradual replacement of R134A with refrigerant R123YF in the automotive industry will help free up our quota for other HFCs, and in the near future we will have alternatives already developed for common HFCs like R404A and R410A available for you in store.

The outcome of this phase-down will ensure Australia will reduce its HFC emissions by a predicted 85%
by 2036, and help establish us as world leaders
and innovators in the refrigerant and cooling industry.
